When you go on a long vacation, especially on the Coastal Region of Kenya you tend to lose track of the days. People from the Coastal region are relaxed, a bit slow and very welcoming indeed.
On this one day, I believe it was a weekday, my cousin and I decided to go to the beach — Galu Beach in Diani. We are seated on the beach beds and I remove my laptop to design something. This white man, who was advanced in years, walks up to us and says, “Wow! You have a Macbook. I saw you talking to Ali. Are you his Marketing Manager? What do you do?” Ali is a Scuba Diver and owner of Scubaduka that sells diving merch and trains scuba divers.
I go ahead and respond, “No, I am not his manager, I am a Creative Designer and we were discussing business.”
Then he went ahead and said, “I love that you are in Africa and you own a Mac. There’s a friend of mine who a lawyer for Apple and he would really be delighted to see this. Mind if I take a picture of you and the Mac?”
I hesitated at first, then figured, what do I got to lose. This led to a whole conversation about this and that, and before we knew it, we were invited to dinner in a beachfront villa. And so we went.
Dinner started off with a glass of chilled white dry wine and a lot of toasting. Then the food came — rice with coconut sauce, lobster and salad. My first time eating seafood and I would definitely say its some strange squishy kind of meat. 😂😂😂 After dinner, we had an improvised cocktail made of gin, pineapple juice, tonic and garnished with lemons.
